Description :

- Mecobal (mecobalamin) is a vitamin B12 coenzyme that occur in the blood and the cerebrospinal fluid.

- Mecobalamin is taken up by the nerve tissue more actively and extensively than other homologues of vitamin B12.

- Mecobalamin is administered orally, rapidly absorbed, excreted mainly in the urine and it's half life is about 12 hours.

- Mecobalamin is necessary for various metabolic functions, including fat and carbohydrate metabolism and protein synthesis, and is necessary for growth, cell replication, haematopoiesis. DNA, RNA, nucleoprotein, lecithin (a major component of the myelin sheath) synthesis. Largely due to it's effects on metabolism of methionin, folic acid and malonic acid in effect, so (mecobalamin) inhibits nerve fiber degeneration in case of neuropathy and accelerates the repair of nerve tissue.

Indications :

- Mecobal (mecobalamin) is clinically effective for treatment numbness, pain and paralysis due to peripheral neuropathies such as diabetic neuropathy and polyneuritis.

 Dosage & administration:

- Mecobal (mecobalamin) it's daily dose for adults is 3 tablets in 3 divided doses. 

Contraindications :

- Mecobal (mecobalamin) is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to mecobalamine, cobalt or to other vitamin B12 substances including cyanocobalamin and hydroxyl cobalamin.

Precautions :

- Mecobal (mecobalamin) should be used with caution in patients whose occupation requires handling mercury of it's components (prolong use of large dose) .

- Mecobal (mecobalamin) should not be administered for extensive periods (months) to patient who show no clinical response.

Drug interactions :

- Mecobal (mecobalamin) absorption may be decreases by colchicin, aminoglycosidic antibiotics, amino salicylic acid and it’s salts and by excessive alcohol intake lasting longer than 2 weeks.

 Side effect :

- Mecobal (mecobalamin) has rarely anorexia, nausea, diarrhea, skin rash.

 Use in pregnancy and lactation.

- Mecobal (mecobalamin) is recommended for use in pregnancy and lactation.
